Services
Each project or assignment may ask for a different set of activities and responsibilities. My approach to each assignment will depend on the client’s expectations and needs, which can be discussed in a free intake consultation. The most commonly requested services are listed below.
‘Janneke Schrage Art Professional’ is registered at the Dutch Handelsregister (Business Register), which is held by the Kamer van Koophandel – KVK (Chamber of Commerce). My hourly rate aligns with the Dutch Museum CAO 2024-2026 (excl. 21% tax) but may vary depending on the assignment type and duration.
Exhibition research and curation
Broadly speaking, I turn ideas into exhibitions that are both engaging and accessible. Depending on the client’s needs, my involvement could relate to preliminary research, the conceptualisation process, or the production of an exhibition.
Research underpins most of my work. I conduct research into artists’ lives and practices, as well as relevant (art) historical context and discourse. I keep track of emerging practices and engage with current critical theory. I may commission new artworks specifically made for exhibitions or collection presentations.
Regular production tasks include reviewing collections (internal or external), requesting loans from institutions or private collectors, coordinating the shipping and installation of artworks, producing wall texts, writing exhibition catalogues, creating audio guide scripts, and overseeing budgeting and timelines.
Curatorial support for artists
Not sure how to present your work to the world? I provide support for communication with external parties, including gallery and museum staff, private collectors, subsidy advisors, and press. This may range from editing e-mails to writing subsidy applications and press kits, or providing second opinions.
Need some guidance? I am happy to support you at every step of presenting your work. I can help you find a language to describe your process, method, and key objectives or advise you on presentation methods and possibilities.
Not sure how to preserve your work for the future? Clutter in the studio and attic? I organise, categorise, document, and register digital and physical archives and collections for the future.
Tight on money? If you, for any reason, cannot afford curatorial support but are convinced you could make good use of it, I am interested in discussing how I can help you for a reduced rate.
Collection and policy advice
Having trouble with decision-making and collection management? I am an experienced collection advisor and can assist in refining collection profiles and institutional objectives.
Based on collection valuation, I formulate policy plans that improve the development, direction, and use of art collections.
I make stories behind collections accessible and increase visitor engagement by defining the artistic, cultural, emotional, and practical value of collection objects. This contributes to public support for the preservation of collections.
Lastly, I present ways to discuss conflicting interests. I identify which sub-collections need special protection and which interventions might be necessary. There may be a need, for instance, to remedy gaps in a collection through acquisition, relocation, or restoration. This optimises the use and design of storage facilities, exhibitions, and collection presentations.
Art Historical Research
Art historical research helps interpret artworks and shows that artistic meaning or value is often multifaceted and historically changeable. As an art historian, I employ various research approaches:
Contextualization and presentation: I conduct contextual research and apply theoretical frameworks to develop new interpretations of art and art practice. My research can support the creation of exhibitions, catalogues, and educational programs.
Critical reflection: I investigate visible and invisible power structures in the art world, including institutional relationships. I examine which perspectives are missing or can be reformulated within the art canon. My research relates to decolonial, ecological, and feminist theoretical frameworks.
Attribution and authentication: Through visual analysis, material research, and archival study, I determine who created a work and whether the work is authentic.
Other
I perform many other activities not mentioned above. For example, you can invite me to develop public programming, speak at seminars, or produce other forms of content.
