Testimonies of the Visually Dispossessed: Unrepresentability in Iraqi art since the Gulf Wars
Thesis on art produced during the Gulf Wars by Iraqi artists Kareem Risan, Hanaa Malallah, and Ali Eyal: Theorising on the definition of testimonial practice, I demonstrate how these artists relate to the experience of the Gulf Wars outside of the popularised framework of ‘image fatigue’. Together, these artistic testimonies attempt to retrieve acknowledgement of the erasure of Iraqi culture and identity, and demand justice from those responsible for it – both of which are unimaginable and unattainable in the reality of today.
